The non-essential amino acid beta-alanine belongs to biogenic amines that have significant physiological and pharmacological effects. The largest amount is bound in muscle tissue. It is part of naturally occurring carnosine and anserine peptides, but also pantothenic acid. The body acquires beta-alanine by degrading the pyrimidine nucleotides (dihydrouracil) or the already mentioned peptides. The harder way to get beta-alanine is to supplement it with dietary supplements.

Research shows that min. 3.2 g of beta-alanine per day for 4 weeks leads to an increase in beta-alanine alanine reserves, resulting in a significant increase in carnosine content in the muscles. (Hill et al., 2007, Harris et al., 2007). According to these studies, carnosine levels increase by up to 80% after 10 weeks. Carnosine is a substance with high buffering capacity, protects cells against oxidative stress and perhaps the most well-known “mysterious” characteristic of carnosine is the prolongation of the lifetime of depleted cells that are doomed to extinction. Sometimes carnosine is referred to as the “longevity factor”.

Athletes use their ability to regulate muscle pH. During intensive exercise, a large amount of protons (H +) are accumulated in the body, muscular cells are exposed to an increasingly acidic and acidic environment. This reduces the ability to contract muscle fibers and reduces performance and strength. According to this theory with higher concentration of carnosine, the buffer capacity increases, which leads to increased performance, later onset of fatigue and delayed exhaustion (Hill et al., 2006). Very good results can be achieved by combining beta alanine with creatine (Zoeller et al 2006).
